What is the pelvic floor ?

The pelvic floor muscles and ligaments stretch from the pubic bone from the front, to the tailbone (coccyx) at the back and to the sitting bone (ischial tuberosity) on the sides. The pelvic floor muscles work as a part of our core muscles, they help keep us continent and are important for a healthy sex life.

Pelvic floor Physiotherapy treats any injury or dysfunction to the pelvic floor area. In the first meeting, the physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment which includes a questionnaire and physical examination. The physiotherapist will then build a treatment plan around the diagnosis and your goals.

The physical assessment can include assessment of the hips and spine, checking the function, coordination and strength of the pelvic floor and core muscles, checking for diastasis recti or stomach muscle separation;  pelvic organ prolapse; and/or pelvic pain issues.

Treatment includes manual therapy to soft tissue, lifestyle education and therapeutic exercises.

Signs that you have pelvic floor problems ?

Urinary issues such as urinary leaking; with or without certain triggers like a sneeze and/or jumping, urinary incontinence, urgency for the bathroom or frequent urination.

Faecal or gas incontinence.

Pain with sexual intercourse or penetration.

Painful scars in the area of the pelvic floor (often from childbirth).

Heaviness or pressure in the area of the perineum and pelvic organ prolapse.

Rectus diastasis (stomach muscle separation) or abdominal weakness from pregnancy.

Pelvic pain during pregnancy or after birth.

Treatment includes manual therapy to soft tissue, lifestyle education and therapeutic exercises.

How can these issues be treated ?

After a thorough assessment to diagnose the problem, your physiotherapist will create a treatment plan that will best suit you. This can include manual therapy on painful or tight areas, lifestyle advice to help improve symptoms and therapeutic exercises to improve the function of your core muscles and pelvic floor.
